Kate Snow is currently evaluating middle school math curricula, and when her work is done, we will post her recommendations in this FAQ.
Susan Wise Bauer, in The Well-Trained Mind, 4th Edition, recommends pre-algebra and algebra-level curricula following instruction through grade 5. In her recommendations, she refers to conceptual and procedural math. If you are not familiar with these terms, you can learn about them in this article from our website.
For post-elementary, pre-Algebra math, Dr. Bauer recommends (alphabetically) Math Mammoth, Math-U-See, Right Start Mathematics, Saxon Math, and Singapore Math. The one that is best suited for you depends on your student's learning style, strengths, and weaknesses.
For post-elementary, algebra-ready math, Dr. Bauer recommends (alphabetically):
- The Art of Problem Solving (conceptual)
- Math-U-See
- Saxon (procedural, spiral)
- VideoText (good blend of conceptual and procedural; mastery)
In the book, Dr. Bauer goes into greater detail about each curriculum, and recommends other resources like online math, conceptual math supplements, and procedural math supplements.
